Microsoft has not yet announced a release date for Windows 12. However, based on the company's current annual feature update schedule and the expected end of support for Windows 10, the next major Windows release is likely to arrive around September or October 2025.

While Microsoft has confirmed that the 2024 update will not be called Windows 12, it will still be a significant release based on the new Germanium platform that powers AI features in the latest Copilot+ PCs. Earlier reports had suggested Windows 12 could come as soon as 2024, based on rumors of a new three-year major release cycle. Intel and Qualcomm had also hinted at a 2024 Windows 12 launch.

But those plans appear to have changed following the departure of longtime Windows leader Panos Panay. The new Windows team likely wants to take more time to put their own stamp on the next major version. Additionally, Windows 11 has only just reached 33% market share, while Windows 10 still leads at 63%. Introducing Windows 12 too soon could further fragment the Windows user base.

So, in summary, while Windows 12 was previously expected sooner, it now seems the next major Windows release will more likely arrive in late 2025, aligning with the end of support for Windows 10.
